Free painting and photo editing application
Sumo Paint is a free, fully-featured image editing and digital painting application. This multimedia software allows you to manage basic photo editing and offers a profound set of color correction tools for drawing and designing. It works in much the same way as most graphic design tools, such as Photoshop and Gimp. It has a large number of filters, effects, and brushes available, and comes with a beautiful interface with support for full retina resolution. However, the app is very slow in applying corrections as compared to its alternatives.
Even though the interface layout of tools in Sumo Paint resembles Photoshop, using the app is quite simple. The app dedicates a large portion of the window to the drawing area, with all the tools displayed surrounding it. It is free of distracting ads, which is very rare among free photo editors. More, it displays in-depth information for the use of each tool. With this, you will know each tool’s function even if you are new to photo editing and painting.
Sumo Paint offers several unique digital drawing tools, including the Symmetry Tool. Using this function, you can create beautiful symmetric patterns and geometric shapes. There are also a variety of effects, including translucency, shadow casting, and gradient, which complements the basic functions of creating, deleting, and duplicating layers. In terms of photo editing, the app allows you to import images via URL or from your PC. It also supports various image formats. On top of that, you can also take advantage of Photoshop-like functions.
Sumo Paint offers both free and pro versions. The free version comes with limited functionality while the pro version offers all features. Also, with the free version, the photo editor is practically unusable, since 80% of all the tools are unavailable. On top of that, some drawbacks can be a bit of a deal-breaker. In addition to the slow application of corrections, the slider also seemed too sharp and inconvenient for precise adjustments. The color correction tools lag, and there is no drag and drop support.
Not quite there yet
Taking things into consideration, Sumo Paint is not on the list of possible alternatives to popular design apps. While it offers various tools, not all of them are available in the free version. However, even if you pay for its license, there are still some drawbacks that affect user experience. The bottom line, the app needs more polishing to give its competition a run for their money.
